Saving Whales is critical in the fight against climate change

We recently watched a great clip from the World Economic Forum about the importance of saving whales when it comes to climate change and wanted to share it with you!

"Whales are a surprising weapon in the fight against climate change and scientists say saving whales could be key to limiting global warming.

Every great whale absorbs 33,000kg of CO2 over its life whereas 1 tree absorbs up to 22kg a year.

And wherever whales go, phytoplankton grows…

These tiny sea creatures absorb around 50% of all CO2.

That's as much a 1.7 trillion trees!

Or four Amazon rainforests!

More whales means more phytoplankton…

And just a 1% rise in phytoplankton would be like planting 2 billion mature trees.

Sadly, humans almost drove wales to the brink of extinction and though industrialised whaling was banned in most places in 1986 numbers are at a quarter of what they once were.

Meanwhile, CO2 is at its highest level in 3 million years  so finding ways to absorb it is critical.

Restoring whale numbers could absorb 1.3 billion tonnes of CO2 every year.

Using nature's own technology to fight climate change."
