Today marks a pivotal moment in our collective effort to end gender-based violence. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which begins on 25 November with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Understanding the 16 Days of Activism
This annual global campaign, initiated by UN Women, is a rallying cry for governments, institutions, and individuals to invest in preventing violence against women and girls. This year's theme, "UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls," underscores the urgent need for action. With the support of civil society groups and the UN's UNITE by 2030 initiative, this campaign is a beacon of hope and change.
Some 736 million women — almost one in three — have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their lives.
More than four in five women and girls (86 per cent) are living in countries without robust legal protection, or in countries for which data is not readily available.
Most violence against women is perpetrated by current or former husbands or intimate partners. More than 640 million or 26 per cent of women aged 15 and older have been subjected to intimate partner violence.
Of those who have been in a relationship, almost one in four adolescent girls aged 15–19 (24 per cent) has experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner or husband. Sixteen per cent of young women aged 15 to 24 experienced this violence in the past 12 months.
These numbers aren't just data; they're a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of gender-based violence and the dire need for preventive measures.
The Role of Women's Rights Organisations
Every step towards preventing violence against women is a stride towards a safer, more equitable world. But current financial commitments to this cause are insufficient. We must increase investments in preventive measures to truly make a difference.
Women's rights organisations are at the frontline, combating gender-based violence and striving for a world where women and girls live free from fear. In this endeavour, organisations like Every Daughter Matters play a pivotal role. Every Daughter Matters, one of our key Charity Partners, is dedicated to combating gender-based violence through education, advocacy, and direct support to affected individuals in Nepal.
Their work is crucial, especially in a world where anti-rights movements are gaining ground, posing significant challenges to women's rights activists. The courage and resilience of these organisations, amidst such challenges, are commendable. By supporting Every Daughter Matters, you contribute directly to their efforts to safeguard and empower women and girls at risk of human trafficking and abuse.
