National Biodiversity Month

It's National Biodiversity Month! This September we’re raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity and encouraging our community of Changemakers to take action to conserve and appreciate our natural world.

Every September, Biodiversity month provides a perfect opportunity to promote and protect the uniqueness of Australia’s biodiversity. Australia is one of 17 countries that are considered ‘mega diverse’ by the United Nations, covering less than 10% of the world’s area but have more than 70% of its biodiversity. This means Australia’s biodiversity has one of the most unique environments in the world filled with animals and plants not seen anywhere else.

It is becoming increasingly more important to protect our unique environment here in Australia. Over the past two centuries, Australia has lost more mammal species than any other continent and continues to have one of the highest rates of species decline among countries in the OECD, making it vitally important to do everything we can to preserve such a unique environment we have.

Carbon Positive Australia (CPA) is an organisation on a mission to protect our planet through a variety of projects aimed at promoting and increasing the world's biodiversity.

CPA’s planting project located on a working farm in Bencubbin, WA includes native sandalwood and creates a natural wind buffer to reduce erosion, improve soil quality and restore biodiversity to the area.

As well as planting, CPA also has restoration projects which aim to restore areas that have been damaged across Australia. Their current project in Brookton Saltland, WA aims to restore health to degraded land that has been badly impacted by salinity and water logging. By revegetating the area with a biodiverse mix of salt-tolerant species, the aim is to prevent further degradation and provide shelter for native animals and livestock.

Wondering how to get involved and help out? Donate through The Difference to Carbon Positive Australia as well as joining a community planting project which can be found on CPA’s website linked here.
